Cultural Olympiad

The Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad is a series of multi-disciplinary festivals and digital programs showcasing the best in Canadian and international arts and popular culture. Launched in 2008, the program culminates with the 60-day Cultural Olympiad 2010 (January 22 to March 21, 2010), which begins before, and continues throughout the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

In 2009, singers/songwriters Ron Hynes, Sherry Ryan and the Nunatsiavut Drum Dancers performed in venues in Vancouver as part of the Cultural Olympiad. With financial support from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, many of the province’s talented artists and entertainers have the opportunity to perform on a national and international stage.

This year, the Cultural Olympiad will once again feature Ron Hynes and The Nunatsiavut Drum Dancers, as well as the theatre group Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland, performing Fear of Flight; indie rock band Hey Rosetta!; folk group The Irish Descendants; digital artist Lisa Porter; visual artists Isabella St. John and Karen Colbourne Martin; comedian and actor Shaun Majumder; signer/songwriter Sherman Downey, and Wonderbolt Circus.

These artists will take the stage in popular venues throughout Vancouver up until March 21, 2010. The Cultural Olympiad is a series of three, multi-disciplinary festivals that began in 2008.

Other Newfoundland and Labrador artists will perform at a variety of venues during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games including:

  • BC Place, as part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s 30-minute Victory Celebration Showcase preceding the medal ceremonies on February 26, 2010 – Newfoundland and Labrador Day at the Olympics
  • Atlantic Canada House, located on Granville Island, from February 13-28
  • The Athletes’ Village
  • Aboriginal Pavilon
  • Place de la Francophonie
