The province has the
Animal Protection Act which establishes the authority to define
and control cruelty to animals. Under this Act the Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Branch veterinarians
and inspectors investigate reports of cruelty.
Other authorities exist as well to investigate and enforce concerns
over issues of cruelty. The Criminal Code of Canada and the Health of
Animals Act (Canada) both have provisions controlling cruelty which are usually
enforced by the RCMP or RNC.
A publication has been written to assist municipalities in the control
of dogs.
