In November 2005, the Province of Alberta announced the creation of the Alberta Centennial Scholarship to celebrate its centennial and its pride in Canada. Starting in 2006, twenty-five scholarships of $2005 will be allocated to each province and territory to encourage students in financial need to pursue post-secondary education anywhere in Canada. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Department of Education will award seventeen scholarships to female students and eight scholarships to male students entering their first year as a full-time student in provincially designated apprenticeship trades. Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for one of these scholarships, 2007 applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Have received a high school diploma or equivalent (attach a copy of original transcript)
  • Be a permanent resident of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Demonstrate financial need in the pursuit of post-secondary education
  • Be enrolled in full time studies at a recognized post-secondary institution entry level (first year) program; minimum 24 weeks apprenticeable trade.

Applications must be received at the Department of Education no later than November 19, 2007

Selection Process

The Selection Committee will consider:

  • information as provided on the application form
  • academic performance
  • financial need
  • written essay submission

Throughout its deliberations, the Selection Committee may take into consideration geographic representation, the anticipated need for specific skilled trade programs and previous Alberta Centennial Scholarship awards.

All applicants will be notified of the result of the competition on or before December 10th, 2007 once enrolment in full-time studies has been confirmed. The successful applicants may expect to receive their scholarships in early 2008.
