Red Indian Lake Stewardship Program

The objective of the Red Indian Lake Stewardship Program is to reduce accidental snaring/trapping mortality of the endangered Newfoundland pine marten through intensive ground level interactions with hunters and trappers in that area. A reduced accidental mortality hinges on the ability of these groups to understand, support and conduct snaring and trapping activities in a manner supportive of marten populations on the island of Newfoundland.

Beginning in the 2000-2001 hunting and trapping season regulatory measures were implemented along with efforts to increase the awareness and stewardship of resource users in the Red Indian Lake Area (RIL).

Hunters and trappers are asked to note that these efforts include, but are not limited to, the following:

Registration/seminars for snarers/trappers in the Red Indian Lake area during the snaring/trapping seasons.

Direct interactions between trained staff and the resource user at the time of registration regarding proper equipment use, marten biology, recovery efforts, etc..

Record snaring and trapping efforts to evaluate total effort.

Dedicated, scheduled and recorded monitoring of the RIL area to evaluate relative rates of compliance.

Directed visits and associated training of persons owning cabins in the area along with presentations within towns near the RIL area.

Distribution of modified snare/trapping equipment and gridded area maps during the time of registration.

Extensive signage/media coverage throughout the area.

In addition to allowing for a comparative evaluation of mortalities in a traditional vs modified setting, these specific efforts will allow an opportunity to measure the effectiveness of such initiatives in increasing user group acceptance/compliance, and whether such strategies, or versions thereof, can or should be applied to the remaining modified snaring zones.
