Red Indian Lake Stewardship Program The objective of the Red Indian Lake Stewardship Program is to reduce accidental snaring/trapping mortality of the endangered Newfoundland pine marten through intensive ground level interactions with hunters and trappers in that area. A reduced accidental mortality hinges on the ability of these groups to understand, support and conduct snaring and trapping activities in a manner supportive of marten populations on the island of Newfoundland. Beginning in the 2000-2001 hunting and trapping season regulatory measures were implemented along with efforts to increase the awareness and stewardship of resource users in the Red Indian Lake Area (RIL). Hunters and trappers are asked to note that these efforts include, but are not limited to, the following:
In addition to allowing for a comparative evaluation of mortalities in a traditional vs modified setting, these specific efforts will allow an opportunity to measure the effectiveness of such initiatives in increasing user group acceptance/compliance, and whether such strategies, or versions thereof, can or should be applied to the remaining modified snaring zones.
