In 1996, it is expected that:
- an economic downturn, prompted mainly by a reduction
in construction work on the GBS, and government restraint will cause employment
and GDP to drop.
- a Development Plan Application will be submitted for the Terra Nova oil
field.
- the Hibernia GBS will be completed.
- oil and gas exploration expenditures on the Province's West coast will
reach record levels.
- two oil wells will be drilled on the Province's West coast at a combined
cost of $32 million.
- the Province's recent land sale will result in 28 oil and gas exploration
permits, representing roughly $21 million in committed exploration expenditures.
- mineral exploration in Labrador will continue at a high level.
- Ming Minerals will employ up to 100 people in their first full year of
production.
- Raymo Processing will start gold production from the tailings of the former
Rambler Mine.
- other small mining operations will proceed to the development and/or
production stage.
- shellfish, in particular crab, shrimp, clams and scallops, will continue to
dominate the fishery.
- aquaculture production will increase significantly over last year's level.
- the sentinel fisheries will be expanded creating employment and providing
more insight into the state of the groundfish stocks, particularly on the South
and West coasts of the Province.
- the second fibre optic route across the Island will be completed by NewTel
Communications, thus ensuring uninterrupted service.
- two supply vessels, designed to service the Hibernia platform during
production, will have been completed at Marystown Shipyard.
- the newsprint industry will experience another good year, and over $90
million will be invested in capital assets.
- Phase I of the Tourism Destination Management System will go into
operation.
- final preparations for the 1997 John Cabot 500th Anniversary Celebrations
will occur at a feverish pace.
