Profiles A Diversifying Sector
- Steelcor Industries, situated in Buchans, is a
machining and fabrication plant involved in manufacturing aerospace components
as well as other high valued products. Much of its work is being done for
aerospace companies in both the United Kingdom and United States. The firm
employs about 23 people.
- Superior Glove Works Ltd., located in Point Leamington, produces high
quality gloves for the export market and a variety of local clients including
Newfoundland Hydro and Newfoundland Telephone. The plant currently employs 70
people.
- Northern Telecom produces a wide range of electronic instruments and
components, mainly for clients in the telecommunications industry. The plant in
St. John's employs approximately 50 people and received national recognition for
its productivity and quality control.
- Glamox Canada, located in Trepassey, is a manufacturer of marine lighting.
The Company exports 80 percent of its manufactured light fixtures to the United
States. The Company presently employs 22 people and is currently expanding its
manufacturing capabilities.
- Newfoundland Slate, located in Trinity Bay, produces a roofing slate that
is used in a number of building applications. Newfoundland Slate has secured
distributors for its products throughout the world. The facility employs 67
people. The Company's future plans include expansion of existing operations and
the development of a second quarry.
- Terra Nova Shoes, located in Harbour Grace, produces and exports its
footwear to markets in Canada, the United States and other countries. This
company uses state of the art high-tech shoemaking equipment to produce a
variety of superior quality footwear for both safety and casual markets. The
Company produces 275,000 pairs annually and employs 130 people.
- ACAN Windows, located in Paradise, manufactures vinyl windows and patio
doors. The Company markets its finished product throughout Atlantic Canada and
also supplies semi-finished product to a sister plant in Ontario. ACAN is now
the largest window supplier in Atlantic Canada. The Company currently employs
about 70 people and has intentions of expanding into other vinyl products.
- Continental Marble Limited, also located in Paradise, initially designed
and manufactured marble (cast polymer) fixtures and paneling. In recent years,
however, it has taken a step forward in that it is franchising its production
system as a turn-key operation worldwide. This franchising opportunity
represents an efficient means for the transfer of this locally developed
technology. EDGE Profiles Companies with Long-Term Potential
- AbbaCom Logic Limited is a high-tech company that will establish a design,
manufacturing and distribution facility in the St. John's area to produce Single
Inline Memory Modules (SIMMs). The Newfoundland plant will be the only one in
Eastern Canada producing these high demand SIMM boards. The project requires
capital investment of $4.45 million and is expected to employ 60 people by its
second year of operation.
- Lotek Marine Technologies, based in St. John's, provides a broad array of
products and services related to the study of fish and wildlife in the marine
environment. This includes fitting animals under study with transmitters and
receivers to assimilate and process related data. The Company will invest $3.2
million and employ 20 people.
- Environmental Acoustics Systems Limited, a locally owned company, has
developed a device utilizing radio frequency and acoustic energy to move and
contain pollutants in water. The system can be used in conjunction with existing
oil spill clean-up technology. The Company will invest $500,000 and employ 30
people by its second year of operation.
- Canada's Original Iceberg Water Inc., a St. John's based company, plans to
manufacture a premium sparkling water product to be sold under the brand name
Canada IceTM. Under a joint venture arrangement with its sister company Canadian
Iceberg Vodka Corporation the Company harvests pieces of icebergs around
Newfoundland for the manufacture of sparkling water. The Company will invest
$5.1 million and employ 100 people by its third year of operation.
- Canadian Iceberg Vodka Corporation, a St. John's based company, in
cooperation with the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation is manufacturing a premium
brand vodka called Iceberg VodkaTM. The Company uses pieces of icebergs
harvested in Newfoundland waters to manufacture its product. The Company has
invested $475,000 and employs 19 people.
- MPRS Mushrooms Inc. has established a facility to grow mushrooms for sale
as a fresh product both within the Province and in export markets. The Company
will invest $1,000,000 and employ 40 people.
- Piccadilly Plastics, located on the Port au Port Peninsula, began
production of plastic coffee creamer cups in late 1995. A fire destroyed the
plant, however, plans are being made to rebuild the facility. When operations
resume, the Company is expected to employ 30 people.
