Vehicle Inspection Requirements

Car

At the time of transfer of ownership following a sale. A copy of the inspection must be filed with MRD along with the transfer documents.

Light Truck or Van with Mass as Shown on the Vehicle Registration Permit for Less Than or Equal to 4500KG

At the time of transfer of ownership following a sale. A copy of the inspection must be filed with MRD along with the transfer documents.

Taxi

When the vehicle is 1 model year old (12 months from the date of manufacture) and each year thereafter. The inspection is valid for a 12 month period and a valid inspection sticker must be displayed upon the vehicle to prove compliance. A copy of the inspection DOES NOT have to be filed at MRD, but must be kept in the vehicle and an inspection IS NOT required for transfer of ownership following a sale.

Trucks, Vans and Truck Tractors with a Mass as Shown on the Vehicle Registration Permit for Greater Than 4500KG

When the vehicle is 1 model year old (12 months from the date of manufacture) and each year thereafter. The inspection is valid for a 12 month period and a valid inspection sticker must be displayed upon the vehicle to prove compliance. A copy of the inspection DOES NOT have to be filed at MRD, but must be kept in the vehicle and an inspection IS NOT required for transfer of ownership following a sale.

Trailer (Ball and Hitch or Pintle Hook Up) With a Mass as Shown on the Vehicle Registration Permit for Greater Than 4500KG

When the vehicle is 1 model year old (12 months from the date of manufacture) and each year thereafter. The inspection is valid for a 12 month period and a valid inspection sticker must be displayed upon the vehicle to prove compliance. A copy of the inspection DOES NOT have to be filed at MRD,but must be kept in the vehicle and an inspection IS NOT required for transfer of ownership following a sale.

Trailer (5th Wheel Hitch Excluding Recreational Travel Trailers)

When the vehicle is 1 model year old (12 months from the date of manufacture) and each year thereafter. The inspection is valid for a 12 month period and a valid inspection sticker must be displayed upon the vehicle to prove compliance. A copy of the inspection DOES NOT have to be filed at MRD, but must be kept in the vehicle and an inspection IS NOT required for transfer of ownership following a sale.

School Buses

Every July and December, commencing 6 months from the date of manufacture. A valid inspection sticker must be displayed upon the vehicle to prove compliance. A copy of the inspection must be filed with MRD. An inspection is not required for the transfer of ownership following a sale.

Public Passenger Buses

Every March and September, commencing 6 months from the date of manufacture. A valid inspection sticker must be displayed upon the vehicle to prove compliance. A copy of the inspection must be filed with MRD. An inspection is not required for the transfer of ownership following a sale.

Disabled Passenger Vehicles

Every March and September, commencing 6 months from the date of manufacture. A valid inspection sticker must be displayed upon the vehicle to prove compliance. A copy of the inspection must be filed with MRD. An inspection is not required for the transfer of ownership following a sale. If the disabled passenger vehicle is used as a school bus the inspection is required to be filed every July and December (as per School Bus requirements).

Failure to comply with the above noted requirements could result in a summary conviction which carries a minimum $600 fine.
