 Criminal Law - Public Prosecutions

The Public Prosecutions Division conducts prosecutions under  the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and certain provincial statutes.

Responsible for:

Conducting criminal trials, arraignments, bail hearings, preliminary inquiries, sentencings, and fatality inquiries;
Representing the Crown in criminal appeals in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and the Supreme Court of Canada;
Providing legal advice to the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, the police and other investigatory agencies in relation to certain criminal matters; and
Developing policy for the administration of criminal law in the Province.


Articling Program

The  Pubic Prosecutions Division and the Civil Division of the Department of Justice work together to offer a comprehensive Articling Program. The Program gives articling students the opportunity to develop the essential knowledge, skills and experience for practicing law. Find out more about the Articling Program.

Offices:

In addition to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and the Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions located at headquarters, the division is comprised of eight regional offices and a Special Prosecutions Unit.
