Government encouraged by tentative deal between IOCC and the United Steelworkers

Premier Danny Williams and Joan Burke, Minister responsible for the Labour Relations Agency, today acknowledged the hard work and commitment of the negotiating teams of the Iron Ore Company of Canada and the United Steelworkers of America which has resulted in a tentative agreement between the two parties.

"Earlier this week I spoke with George Kean of the United Steelworkers and Terry Bowles of the Iron Ore Company of Canada to express government’s concern about the situation, and I reiterated government’s offer of assistance to bring the dispute to a successful conclusion," Premier Williams said. "I am delighted that the two sides were able to come together and resolve this strike, which has been very difficult on the employees and the whole region."

The tentative deal was reached late yesterday following many long days and nights of marathon bargaining which began in Sept-Iles on August 22 and concluded in Labrador City on August 31. "I would like to commend the work of the negotiators from both sides who bring a wealth of experience and professionalism to a task that presents many challenges," said Minister Burke.
