Minister discusses issues of importance in Labrador; Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, discussed a wide range of issues and concerns with Chief Anastastia Qupee during a visit this week to Sheshatshui, The minister was also in Happy Valley- Goose Bay and North West River. "This was an opportunity to hear and see firsthand the challenges and issues people in this area of Labrador face daily," said Minister Burke. "During the summer, I toured six communities along the north coast of Labrador as part of a delegation with the Premier and I have been anxious to meet with community leaders and advocates in the Lake Melville area. There is no better way to become familiar and gain a solid understanding of the issues of importance to the people we serve. "My discussion with Chief Qupee was very informative, focusing on social issues such as the provision of services for victims of violence, the importance of education for Innu children and the need for training for the Innu to avail of job opportunities at Voisey’s Bay. I am extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to listen and learn from the Chief on these and other concerns she and the residents of Sheshatshui share." With the assistance of John Hickey, MHA for Lake Melville, Minister Burke met with the council of North West River to discuss employment programs, the importance of having some flexibility within these programs for the people who use them and other issues of general concern to the community. The minister also toured the Friendship Centre, the Mokami Women’s Centre and Libra House in Happy Valley-Goose Bay meeting with both staff and members of the community who are involved with the work done at these centres. "I was especially impressed with the number of community partnerships that contribute to the successful operation of facilities such as the Friendship Centre and Libra House. There is an overwhelming volunteer force and strong commitment to community which speaks to the great potential that exists to work together to address issues of concern to the people in this area."
