Provincial Government Assisting with Job-matching Employers and Newcomers for a Stronger Economy and Population Growth

September 22, 2021

To help employers challenged to fill full-time job vacancies and newcomers seeking work, the Department of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills will be job-matching employers with qualified newcomers looking to immigrate permanently to Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills, provided details of the new job-matching initiative to strengthen the economy and support population growth this morning at YellowBelly Brewery and Public House. The St. John’s business is an established employer of newcomers, designated under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program since 2017.

As part of ongoing efforts to accelerate immigration to 5,100 permanent residents annually by 2026, starting today, employers are encouraged to visit here and provide information on their full-time vacancies. Employers will be able to submit details about their workforce needs on an on-going basis, but are strongly encouraged to sign up early if they have vacant, full time, year-round jobs right now. Employer inquires can be emailed to pathways@gov.nl.ca.

For international graduates living in Newfoundland and Labrador seeking full-time employment, as well as individuals who have open work permits here and in other parts of Canada, who would like to permanently relocate to the province, from September 29 to October 13, they can complete a detailed on-line registration form. Department staff will then work to match this group of newcomer applicants to the labour needs of participating employers. Future application intake periods will be issued on a regular basis to gather interest from people looking to immigrate to Newfoundland and Labrador.

For details on the privacy, collection, use and disclosure of information for employers, please see the backgrounder below.

This latest population growth initiative supports the Provincial Government’s commitment to minimize the challenges faced by newcomers, their families, employers, and organizations. It is one of many actions in support of efforts to triple immigration by 2026 such as:

  • Supporting integration and settlement of newcomers, including employment and training, foreign qualification recognition, language training, cultural supports, and other initiatives to help newcomers adapt to their new home and foster a sense of belonging.
  • Developing a new online application system to make it easier and faster for newcomers to Canada to settle in Newfoundland and Labrador. The system will be user-centered, with enhanced functionality for applicants and employers.
  • Launching promotional and marketing campaigns focused on attracting prospective residents from other parts of Canada and around the world.
  • Increasing immigration staff, including personnel to assist employers with immigration, and to help newcomers navigate the immigration system. Staff will also enhance employee capacity in settlement and integration, and diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Adding English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors in the K-12 school system, building on investment in additional ESL hires from the two previous budgets.
  • Increasing training for Provincial Government staff to better support newcomers.

Quote
“By directly matching employers in need with people wanting to live and work here, we are helping to address the workforce needs of employers and support population growth. Participating employers provide detail on their vacant full-time jobs, then, qualifying newcomers provide their job qualifications. Once that occurs, our staff will begin matching newcomers who need jobs with employers who need workers.”
Honourable Gerry Byrne
Minister of Immigration, Population Growth, and Skills
