Town Develops Economic Plan as Blueprint for Future Development

Lisa Browne
Deputy Mayor for the Town of Clarenville

The Town of Clarenville, located within the Clarenville-Bonavsita Rural Secretariat region, has recently completed an exercise to develop a blueprint for its economic future. This work was completed in partnership with several key stakeholders including the Clarenville and Area Chamber of Commerce, ACOA, Department of Innovation, Trade & Rural Development, Association of Canadian Entrepreneurs and the Discovery Regional Development Board.

The development of this strategic plan for economic development involved primary and secondary research. Participants in key informant interviews and surveys acknowledged that the town is important as a service centre to the entire region.

Respondents felt that the primary role is to act as an initiator, supporter, advocate and facilitator of economic opportunities and to build upon the inter-dependence which exists with the communities throughout the region.

The plan maps out the direction of the town’s Economic Development Committee for the next three years. The major themes of the plan are: marketing and promotion particularly in terms of branding and winter tourism; the importance of developing partnerships with surrounding municipalities and other groups, such as the Rural Secretariat; town service delivery; infrastructure and advocacy.

The Economic Development Committee has already begun to work on the implementation of the recommendations of the plan
