What is a population pyramid?
A population pyramid is two back-to-back bar graphs, one showing the number of males and one showing females in a particular population in five-year age groups. Males are conventionally shown on the left and females on the right.

A great deal of information about the population can be read from a population pyramid. An optimally shaped pyramid is "larger" on the bottom (younger age groups) and "smaller" on the top (older age groups).

Note: Baby boomers are highlighted to show their relative importance in the overall population structure.

Baby boomers were born between 1947 and 1966
