Member for Labrador West
In the October 11, 2011 general election, Nick McGrath was elected to represent the people of the District of Labrador West in the House of Assembly.
Mr. McGrath was born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, the second youngest of parents Kathleen (Dobbin) and William McGrath’s 11 children.
As a young man seeking work opportunities, he moved to Labrador West 33 years ago and made it his home.
In the past three decades, Mr. McGrath has established himself as a successful businessman who has owned and operated six businesses in Labrador West. He has embraced challenges and enjoyed many successes over his years in Labrador West working and volunteering in his community.
Mr. McGrath has been a strong advocate for Labrador West and has a long and varied list of volunteer activities and leadership roles he has been a part of. These include: Northern Shotokan Karate Club; Lab West Rotary Club (Past President); Labrador West Rowing Association (President); Labrador West Coxswains Association (Past President); Labrador City Town Council (Councillor); Carol Players Drama Club (Past President); a member of Northern Lights Drama Club; the Labrador Chair of East, West, North Expo; Hospitality NL (Past President); a member of the Labrador West Chamber of Commerce; board member of Destination Labrador; Labrador West Tourism Association (Past President); Our Lady of Perpetual Help – Sacristan, Lector, Altar Server; Labrador Grenfell Health – Director 2004 -2008; Councillor – Town of Labrador City (elected in 2009); and President of Combined Councils of Labrador (elected in 2010).
Over the years, Mr. McGrath has realized many milestones and has gained plenty of recognition for his contributions to the towns of Labrador City and Wabush as well as his contributions to the province.
These achievements include: Shotokan Karate Martial Arts – Shodan Rank (Black Belt); Builders Award (Town of Labrador City); Golden Umbrella Award (Hospitality NL); Ambassador Award (Hospitality NL); Restaurateur of the year Award (NLRFSA); Reg Harte Memorial Award 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011 (NL Drama Society); Presidents Award (LWRA); Coxswains Award (LWRA); and, Marie Greene Award (LWCC).
With a solid and experienced background on a municipal, regional, provincial and national level, Mr. McGrath stepped forward to put that experience to work in the House of Assembly for the betterment of his constituency.
Mr. McGrath has a daughter Krista-Lee, a son Joshua and one grandson, Nash.
