Terminology
- Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (ATIPPA)
- Newfoundland and Labrador’s provincial legislation respecting the right to access of government held records and the protection and privacy of personal information.
- Adjournment
- Any postponement of a review, other than a withdrawal.
- Clarification
- The WHSCRD may clarify any matter in question if it is deemed appropriate.
- Decision
- The written outcome of a case being reviewed.
- Request for Review
- The formal request for review of a final decision arising from WHSCC.
- Withdrawal
- The choice of the applicant not to proceed with the review process.
- Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act (WHSCA)
- An act respecting the health and safety of workers and the compensation of workers for injuries suffered in the course of their employment.
- Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (WHSCC)
- An employer-funded no fault insurance system that promotes safe and healthy workplaces, provides return-to-work programs and fair compensation to injured workers and their dependents. This is where the internal review process takes place and it is the first level of review.
- Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Review Division (WHSCRD)
- The final level of review for workers, dependents and employers dissatisfied with decisions of the WHSCC. It is a quasi-judicial body established under section 21 of the WHSCA
that considers requests for review of decisions arising from the WHSCC.
- Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Review Division Regulations (WHSCRDR)
- Regulations covering the operations of the WHSCRD.

Key People
- Chief Review Commissioner (CRC)
- The head Review Commissioner for the WHSCRD appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council under Section 22 of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act.
- Client Service Representative (CSR)
- The WHSCRD staff member who schedules hearings, prepares client files and is the main contact for a client.
- Client
- A worker, dependant, employer, representative, or any person considered by the WHSCRD to be an interested party to the review process
- Representative
- A person authorized, in writing, to act on behalf of the worker, employer, or WHSCC during the review process/hearing.
- Review Commissioner (RC)
- An individual appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council who conducts a review of a decision arising from the WHSCC.
