Adult Basic Education (ABE)

What is ABE?

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a provincial high school equivalency program for adult learners. To be eligible for admission to ABE, an individual must be 19 years of age or older and a resident of Canada (includes permanent residents, landed immigrants or persons with refugee status). A special admission/exemption request may be considered by the Department if a student is 18 years of age and has not attended school for at least 12 months. Students younger than 18 years of age are not eligible for consideration.

The ABE program comprises three levels: Level I teaches basic literacy and numeracy; Level II provides transitional skills similar to grades 7-9; and Level III equates to grades 10-12 and requires the completion of a minimum of 36 credits in order to graduate.

The ABE program is delivered by non-profit community-based centres and private institutions. Full-time ABE service providers offer 25 hours of daytime instruction per week.
