Immigration and Multiculturalism is responsible for the Provincial Government’s strategies, policies, programs, services and initiatives related to the attraction, recruitment and retention of immigrants to the province. The office is responsible for five primary areas:
- Raising awareness within the province of the benefits of immigration;
- Promoting the province as a desirable destination for prospective immigrants;
- Administering the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP);
- Improving retention through enhanced settlement and integration services; and
- Promoting multiculturalism throughout the province.
Services
Immigration plays a key role in addressing labour market challenges and growing the diversity of Newfoundland and Labrador communities. The office plays an integral role in achieving these outcomes through a range of public policy and program initiatives, including management and development of the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP), the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP), the Newfoundland and Labrador Settlement and Immigration Program (NLSIP), the Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Integration of Newcomers (LMIN) Program, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Multiculturalism Program (NLMP). The office is also the Provincial Government’s primary liaison for immigration-related matters with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), Service Canada, Canada Boarder Services Agency, and with governments from other Canadian and international jurisdictions.
