Employment and Training Assessment (ETA)

The Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour (AESL) provides a variety of services and supports to assist individuals with reaching their employment goals. Staff is available to help individuals to assess employment needs, access services and supports and to develop Employment Plans to reach employment goals. To assist us in determining the most appropriate supports to meet your needs, the department has developed a simple Employment and Training Assessment (ETA).

Who should complete the ETA?

  • Individuals requiring more individualized employment and training services and supports.
  • Individuals seeking funding to support employment or training; this includes funding for post-secondary education, short-term training, work supports and other employment and training supports.
  • Individuals unsure of the employment and training services or financial supports they may need.

Why complete this assessment?
The information will assist you in accessing services and/or financial supports that best suit your employment and training needs. It will also assist staff in determining your eligibility for services or financial supports and providing you with relevant information.

What type of individual assistance is available?
Depending on your level of need, individual assistance may include:

  • Information services, employment planning or access to financial supports to support employment and training; or
  • Employment counselling to help you with making informed career decisions and addressing challenges to finding and keeping a job.

What information is collected on the assessment?
The assessment collects information on your education, training, work and job search experiences; barriers to employment; and your request for services.

What is the next step after completing the assessment?
After completing the assessment your information and request for services or supports will be reviewed by Advanced Education, Skills and Labour and a staff person will contact you to discuss next steps.

Do I also need to complete an application for Skills Development?
Not at this time, however, if Skills Development is what you need and you are eligible for funding, our staff will contact you to assist you with your Employment Plan application for funding.

How to complete the ETA?

Telephone or In Person

You can complete the ETA by calling 1-800-563-6600 or emailing AESL@gov.nl.ca to set up a time that is convenient for you. This provides an opportunity for both you and our staff to work through the process together and answer any questions you may have on the process or services or supports available to you.


Individuals can complete the ETA on-line. You work on the form at your convenience until it’s complete. It’s important that you save your information while completing the ETA. When complete, review and print a copy for yourself before you submit it on-line. Once the form is submitted you will no longer be able to access it from the web.

If you don’t have access to a computer or need assistance in getting set up with the on-line ETA, you may use a computer at one of our Employment Centres.

Online Workshops

The Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour understands the importance of providing alternative service delivery options for individuals who are unable to visit our Employment Centres or prefer to use web based services in the comfort of their own home.

We have a number of employment related workshops available to assist individuals in their career and employment planning process.

There are also a number of workshops available to assist employers with a host of human resource related needs.

You can complete these online or in a group setting at our Employment Centres. The workshops for individuals can generally be completed within 20-25 minutes.

To access the Advanced Education, Skills and Labour Forms and Workshops users will require the following technical operating system(s): IE 8, Chrome or Firefox. The workshops use Flash which has limited functionality on mobile devices such as Apple iPads without the use of specialized applications such as Puffin.
