How to Renew your Driver’s Licence

You can also renew by mail, fax, or in-person. If renewing by mail please make cheque or money order payable to “The Newfoundland Exchequer” or submit your credit card information on the application form.
Renewal applications along with the required fees can be sent to the nearest Motor Registration office or Government Service Center in your area.
For your information protection and security, please note that credit card information cannot be submitted by email.
Renewal applications submitted by email will be deleted and an email asking you to renew either online, by mail, fax or in-person will be returned to you. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Photo Requirements

If you were 19 years of age or older the last time you had your photo taken, photos are only required to be updated every 10 years.

If you need to update your photo, you will be notified on your driver’s licence renewal application.

Even if a new photo is required, you can still renew online and get a receipt that allows you to continue driving for up to 40 days. Your confirmation receipt and your current driver’s licence card will be valid for 40 days from the date of payment. During this time you must visit your nearest Government Services Centre or Motor Registration Division to have a new photo taken.
Non-Expired Driver’s Licence
You must renew your driver’s licence every 5 years on or before your birthday. Your expiry date can be found on your driver’s licence card. It is your responsibility to ensure that your driver’s licence is valid. Renewals can be completed online, by mail or fax, or in person.
When you renew your driver’s licence you will need to pay the renewal fee as well as any outstanding fines. If you renew online or in person, these fees can be paid through Visa, Mastercard, Interac Debit Card, or Visa Debit Card. If you renew by mail, please make cheque or money order payable to “The Newfoundland Exchequer” or submit the Credit Card Payment information on the registration document for mail or fax payments.

Expired Driver’s Licence
If your driver’s licence is expired less than 5 years, you may renew your licence without taking any written, vision or road tests. You will be required to complete a driver’s licence questionnaire and pay applicable fees for the class of licence you hold.
You may also be required to submit a medical, depending on your age, class of licence, or medical condition. For more information about medical requirements please click here or call Motor Registration Division at 1-877-636-6867.
If your driver’s licence is expired more than 5 years but less than 10 years you will be required to take a written, vision and road test. However, you may be given credit for the time previously spent as a licenced driver and you may be exempted from the Graduated Driver Licensing Program. These requests can be made in writing to the Office of the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.
If your driver’s licence is expired more than 10 years you will be required to re-enter the Graduated Driver Licensing Program.

Expired Novice (Learner) Licence
If your licence is expired more than 5 years the applicant will not get credit for previous driving experience.
If your licence is expired more than 1 year, you will be required to take the written and vision test again.
Once you pass the written and vision test you have 6 months to pay for licence or you will have to complete a written and vision test again.
Once you pass the road test, you have 1 year to pay for the licence, otherwise, you will have to start from the beginning with written and vision test, but you would get credit for driving experience in Level I.
