Science Education (MPC)

Modification Details for Science

  • The development, teaching, learning and evaluation of a modified prescribed course in Science is informed by a progression of learning expectations. These expectations are outlined in K to 12 curriculum guides and delineate four General Curriculum Outcomes (GCO) representing critical aspects of the student’s scientific literacy.
  • Teachers will ensure no GCO Strand or Content Unit is deleted.
Information Regarding the Modification of Science
GCO  Guidance
GCO1/3: STSE/Knowledge

For Science K to Science 3, expectations for STSE and knowledge are combined under one heading.

When considering modification of an STSE/Knowledge expectation follow the instructions provided for GCO 3: Knowledge expectations.

GCO 1: Science, society, technology, and environment (STSE) expectations
(100 series)
STSE expectations are common within and progress among grade groupings (i.e., 4-6, 7-9, 10-12). Students may have multiple opportunities to meet expectations within grade groupings.
GCO 2: Skills expectations
(200 series)
Skill expectations are common within and progress among grade groupings (i.e., K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12). Students may have multiple opportunities to meet expectations within a grade level or grouping.

When considering modification of a Skill expectation for Science K-6, Science 1206, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, consult the SCO Continuum in the Integrated Skills unit introduction. For other science courses, multiple curriculum guides will need to be referenced to visualize the continuum.

GCO 3: Knowledge expectations
(300 series)
For Science K-6, Science 1206, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics consult the SCO Continuum in the unit introductions.

For other science courses, multiple curriculum guides will need to be referenced to visualize the continuum.

GCO 4: Attitudes expectations
(400 series)
Attitudes are encouragement statements and do not appear in a modified prescribed template.

Teachers should encourage the development of attitudes for students on prescribed and modified prescribed curriculum.

Note: Environmental Science 3205 is an exception. It does not follow the GCO structure of the Pan-Canadian Framework.
