High School Volunteer Award

The Department of Education and the Office of Public Engagement have established an award that recognizes the community service of young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The high school volunteer award is designed to recognize one student in every high school for the contribution he or she has made in their community or school, and showcase the significant contributions that students make throughout the province.

Each high school can select one student annually from Levels I, II, or III for the award. The recipient could be a student who has volunteered a significant amount of time with an organization or organizations; someone who made sacrifices, or overcome barriers, to make a volunteer contribution, or someone who has had an effect on an individual(s) or on their community as a whole. High school principals will be asked to select the recipient in consultation with students, staff, school councils and the community.

Information regarding submissions has been sent to all provincial public high schools. Recipients will be presented with a medallion displaying an image designed by Duane Hollett, a student at John Burke High School in Grand Bank.

Duane describes his design as representing “student volunteers with arms outstretched, reaching out to others with helping hands and loving hearts, to assist and comfort those in need.”
