NunatuKavut Community Council

The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is the representative Indigenous organization for approximately 6,000 Inuit of south and central Labrador. In 1991, the NCC, formerly known as the Labrador Metis Nation (LMN), filed a land claim with the Federal Government covering a significant portion of Labrador. In May 2010, the NCC submitted an updated land claim document to the federal government entitled Unveiling NunatuKavut.

In Unveiling NunatuKavut, the NCC asserts that its members have a valid claim of Aboriginal title and treaty rights, and asserts there are two separate and distinct Inuit populations in Labrador: the South Central Labrador Inuit (NCC) and the Northern Inuit (Nunatsiavut Government).

On July 12, 2018, the Federal Government announced its establishment of a Recognition of Rights and Self-Determination Table (the “Table”) with NCC. The Table was described as the start of discussions on recognition of NCC’s Indigenous rights and aspirations for self-determination.
