Background

The Labrador Winter Games were established in 1983 and are held every three years in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The Games are often referred to as the “Friendship Games” and feature traditional and modern-day sports and skill competitions which reflect the cultural diversity of Labrador.

The Games were introduced to promote the development of sport and recreation programs throughout Labrador communities; encourage, promote and enhance co-operation and understanding among all peoples of the region; and revive and encourage the development of sports and activities associated with the traditional lifestyles of the region.  The Games are open to individuals of all ages.

Athletes from across Labrador participate in a number of both indoor and outdoor events that test both skill and endurance over the period of a week.

Operating costs for the Games are covered through government contributions, sponsorship and athlete registration fees. Government is the primary funder with Labrador Affairs administering the funding for the Labrador Winter Games.
