- White Pine Management has been recently added to the Province’s silviculture program.
- Species is valuable but silvicultural enhancement has been ignored until recently because of severe disease problems.
- White Pine Blister Rust, introduced from Europe in the early 1900's, has decimated White Pine by killing most of the regeneration.
A better understanding of the disease and other issues has led to the implementation of new silvicultural prescriptions:
- Planting 400-700 pine seedlings per hectare in combination with spruce plantations
- Genetic tree improvement programs – seed collection programs which target disease resistant trees
- Forest improvement programs to favour White Pine crop trees
- Pruning of juvenile trees to reduce their susceptibility to disease
