• White Pine Management has been recently added to the Province’s silviculture program.
• Species is valuable but silvicultural enhancement has been ignored until recently because of severe disease problems.
• White Pine Blister Rust, introduced from Europe in the early 1900's, has decimated White Pine by killing most of the regeneration.

A better understanding of the disease and other issues has led to the implementation of new silvicultural prescriptions:

• Planting 400-700 pine seedlings per hectare in combination with spruce plantations
• Genetic tree improvement programs – seed collection programs which target disease resistant trees
• Forest improvement programs to favour White Pine crop trees
• Pruning of juvenile trees to reduce their susceptibility to disease
