The pursuit of outdoor activities has long been an important component of Newfoundland and Labrador’s culture. Tradition and heritage have developed in us a strong sense of ownership of our landscape, and we are very quick to respond to any perceived threats to our rights to this resource. This sense of ownership, however, brings with it a responsibility. Stewards are individuals or organizations that accept this responsibility and become custodians of their environment. Stewardship refers to the wide range of actions and activities of individuals, communities, corporations, groups and organizations acting alone or in partnership to ensure the continued health and sustainability of our natural resources.
The Wildlife Habitat Stewardship Program seeks to develop cooperative agreements with international, national, provincial, and municipal governments, non-government organizations, industry, and others for the delivery of stewardship initiatives related to the conservation of wildlife and wildlife habitat. This program area also represents the Provinces primary contribution to the implementation of the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture (EHJV) in Newfoundland and Labrador which leverages significant funds for conservation of wildlife and habitat in the province.
Program Goals and Objectives:
- To identify productive wildlife habitat, and to work with municipalities, non-profit organizations, landowners, developers and corporations to seek a balance which meets the needs of present generations but also ensures the conservation of the habitat to support wildlife.
- To conserve, restore and enhance important habitat for wildlife, in particular guided by the goals of the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture and North American Waterfowl Management Plan.
- To increase the profile of our more productive and rare habitat types, such as wetlands, in municipal, provincial and federal land-use planning.
- To increase decision-maker and individual community resident, awareness and sense of personal responsibility, or conservation ethic, towards the wildlife and habitat found within their purview.
- To build meaningful partnerships to leverage project based funding for wildlife and habitat conservation in NL.
