Daily wildfire risk
The Canadian Fire Weather Index System is the main source of wildfire risk information that wildland fire agencies use.
The Fire Weather Index uses scientific models to assess current forest conditions.
A network of weather stations across Newfoundland and Labrador collect information about forest conditions. including:
- Temperature
- Relative humidity
- Wind speed
- Rainfall
- Moisture levels
This data is compiled into the Fire Weather Index map and updated daily to help wildfire managers assess:
- How easily vegetation such as dry grass, leaves, needles, brush, and trees could ignite.
- How quickly a wildfire could spread.
- How difficult it may be to control.
It also helps determine where wildfire fighting resources, including ground crews and aircraft, should be positioned.
Forest conditions can vary by region. One area of the province may have a low wildfire risk, while a nearby area may be at high risk on the same day.
