Birth Records over 100 years

Section 30 of the Vital Statistics Act, 2009 lists restrictions on who can apply for a birth certificate for a birth that occurred over 100 years ago. However; any person can apply for a certified copy of a birth registration. These applications cannot be made online and must be mailed in to our office. Please note, given the age of these records there is often not an actual registration that can be copied, so in lieu of a certified copy we can provide a Birth Information Letter. This letter is signed by the Registrar General and contains all relevant information.

To apply for a Certified Copy of Birth Registration / Birth Information letter, please submit the following documentation:

  • Completed application form (sections 1 and 3)
  • Valid, government issued photo ID
  • Proof of death for the subject of the birth record (ie: Government issued Death Certificate), if death occurred outside NL.
  • $35.00 application fee – this can be paid using the credit card authorization form.
