Labrador Sport Travel Subsidy

Air travel for sanctioned sporting teams may be approved for a subsidy of 75% of the cost of return tickets for each team, to and from their community, up to a maximum of the following amounts:

  • Teams can receive subsidy for air travel that covers 75 per cent of the cost of airfare. The maximum subsidy amounts have been increased as follows:
    • $6,000 to $7,500 for teams from the North Coast and the South Coast;
    • $6,000 to $6,500 for teams from Labrador West; and
    • $5,500 to $6,500 for teams from Central Labrador.
  • Athletes have been eligible for up to four individual per fiscal year (either air or driving). Further to this, now athletes that are successful in earning a position on a provincial team, are eligible for two individual subsidies to support participation on the team.
  • A new mileage claim replaces the previous receipt-based system in order to streamline the reimbursement process for road travel. Kilometres are calculated based on the distance between the community of residency and the community hosting the event, using the NL Statistics Agency kilometre matrix.
  • For convenience, on-line fillable applications have been introduced for the airfare subsidy, hosting subsidy and mileage claims.
  • In Budget 2023, funding to SSNL increased by $100,000 to $400,000 annually. The increase in funding addresses increases in airfare costs, the implementation of a junior varsity program in Labrador, the development of Indigenous games, and centralized sporting events to expand opportunities for Labrador student-athletes.
