Hibernia

Official Hibernia Project Website

The Hibernia field was discovered in 1979 by the drilling of the Chevron et al Hibernia P-15 well. Between 1979 and 1984, Mobil, as operator for the participants, drilled nine additional wells to delineate the field. A Significant Discovery Area for the Hibernia field was officially declared on October 2, 1985. The field began oil production from a Gravity Base Structure platform on November 17, 1997.

The Hibernia field is located on the northeastern Grand Banks approximately 315 km southeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland, in a water depth of about 80 metres. When it was initially proposed for development, the field had an area of about 223 square kilometers and the proponent estimated that it contained 520 Million barrels of recoverable oil in two separate reservoirs named, Hibernia and Avalon.

For estimates of recoverable oil and gas reserves and resources and production statistics please see the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board website.
