In-House Databases

A number of in-house databases are available for searching at our offices or by contacting our staff. These databases include an in-house version of the GeoFiles database and the Drill-hole Database. These two databases contain metadata for the GeoFiles collection. There are several small in-house databases that give short descriptions for items not yet in the GeoFiles collection. Finally, there are two other databases that describe the library and the image collections. To request searches of these databases please contact Geofiles@gov.nl.ca.

Newfoundland and Labrador GeoFiles Database

This database contains descriptions of about 95% of the documents in the GeoFiles, an in-house collection of over 21,000 geoscientific documents pertaining to Newfoundland and Labrador and immediate offshore regions. These documents include mineral exploration assessment reports, published reports and maps, open-file reports and maps, university theses, books and book excerpts, and unpublished reports and maps. The descriptions or records for the documents may be searched by bibliographic, geographic, geological terms and mineral exploration terms.

Newfoundland and Labrador Drill-hole Database (DRILL)

This database contains drill-hole information from non-confidential reports in the GeoFiles collection. The information is specific to an individual drill-hole, e.g., length of hole. Not all information fields are completed for all records. The information supplements the information in the Geofiles Database. (It is current only to 1994).

Newfoundland and Labrador Geoscience Library Database (GSLIB)

This database contains descriptions of documents in the Geological Survey technical library. The library contains mainly geoscientific documents referring to areas other than this Province and includes bound publications and maps by the Geological Survey of Canada and by other provincial, federal and international surveys. It includes current and back issues for journals, technical books and reference material. The database provides access to these documents by bibliographic terms, e.g., author and words in the title.

Newfoundland and Labrador Geoscience Image Database (IMAGE)

This database contains descriptions of images whether these images appear on slides, photos, negatives and videos. Begun in 1998 the database now has descriptions for over 50 percent of the current collection.
