The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, is wishing Muslim Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a happy Eid al-Fitr.
Eid al-Fitr is a religious holiday at the conclusion of Ramadan, a month-long time of fasting, self-reflection, and charity for Muslims throughout the world. Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important days of the year for Muslims, who gather with family and friends to participate in special prayers, share a celebratory meal, and give generously to people in need.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, the diverse and growing Muslim community holds a large community prayer to mark Eid al-Fitr. This year’s gathering was held at the Jack Byrne Arena earlier today.
On Friday, May 18, Minister Hawkins and Bernard Davis, MHA for Virginia Waters – Pleasantville, attended a prayer service at the Masjid-an-Noor Mosque in St. John’s during Ramadan, which this year began on Wednesday, May 16.
In February 2018, the Provincial Government released the first annual Diversity Calendar, meeting a key commitment in the Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador to publicly acknowledge cultural holidays and events. Initiatives such as this deliver on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.
“Throughout the month of Ramadan, Muslim Newfoundlanders and Labradorians helped people in need and gave back to their communities throughout the province. I wish the Muslim community a joyful and well-deserved Eid al-Fitr celebration.”
