Registration Open for 2018 Becoming an Outdoors Woman Workshop

Registration for the upcoming Becoming an Outdoors Woman Workshop at Killdevil Camp and Conference Centre, Gros Morne National Park, is now open. The workshop will run from October 12 to 14, 2018.

This workshop helps women learn and improve skills related to hunting, fishing, camping and hiking. Sessions are taught at an introductory level for women interested in learning more about outdoor activities from skilled instructors.

The fee for the workshop is $275 and includes all meals, accommodations and materials. To download a registration package, visit the Fisheries and Land Resources website www.flr.gov.nl.ca/wildlife/snp/programs/education/outdoor_woman.html, send a request by email to fosnp2016@gmail.com, or call Salmonier Nature Park at 709-229-7888. Becoming an Outdoors Woman Workshop Program

Introduction to Plants and Wildlife Identification
Participants will be introduced to birding/wildlife/plant identification on a guided outdoor hike to look for wild foods and discuss nature and wildlife conservation.

Hiking
Participants will learn everything they need to know to enjoy a day hike, including proper clothing, map reading, trail selection and risk management.

Trail Hike/Green Gardens
Join TA Loeffler, renowned outdoor adventurer and Memorial University professor of outdoor education, on a day hike to Green Gardens in Gros Morne National Park.

Intro to GPS Navigation
Learn about Global Positioning System (GPS) terminology and benefits, and navigate to a specific destination.

Archery Basics
Learn basic archery techniques and develop skills to become a proficient archer or bow hunter.

Outdoor Cooking
Prepare tasty meals and desserts while having fun in the outdoors.

Fly Tying
Learn about basic fly-tying equipment and techniques to get started in this intriguing pastime. Participants will tie and take home two beginner patterns.

Nature Photography
Learn about photo composition, lighting, weather and other concerns specific to landscape and wildlife photography. Participants must bring their own cameras and indicate camera type on the registration form.

Rifle Basics
This class will include gun safety and handling, and shooting using .22 calibre and larger rifles. Learn the importance of sight picture, breathing, and trigger pull in successful rifle shooting.

Shotgun Basics
This class will include a safety and handling session, overview of shotgun types, and ammunition use. Learn to judge distances and basic shooting techniques, and shoot at clay targets.

Fly Casting
Introduction to the equipment and clothing required to enjoy this marvelous form of fishing. Participants will learn good casting techniques, how to join lines, and when to use different types of flies.
