Minister Haley Recognizes International Day of the Girl

  • Executive Council

October 11, 2019

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is recognizing International Day of the Girl which has been recognized each year since 2012 on October 11. This day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges young women and girls face in our society, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

This year’s theme, ‘GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable’, recognizes the work that has been done around the world to push forward on the many issues young girls have faced over time. Global movements on issues such as child marriage, education inequality, gender-based violence, and climate change have expanded and girls are proving they are unscripted and unstoppable.

Through the Violence Prevention Initiative, the Provincial Government is committed to educating and raising awareness against all vulnerable populations, including young girls. The Provincial Government will continue to work to address the ways violence is perpetrated in our communities through initiatives that directly target violent behavior and fight the social normalization of violence.

I remain committed to ensuring girls are able grow up in a violence-free environment. Violence against young girls is simply unacceptable. Today and every day we applaud those who continue to stand up and fight and we encourage all young girls to feel as though they can make a difference.”
