The Honourable Carol Anne Haley, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, today announced provincial funding to support the Coalition Against the Sexual Exploitation of Youth (CASEY). The organization will receive $60,100 in funding to support their work in raising awareness about the seriousness and degree of sexual exploitation of youth in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Formed in 2006 and coordinated by Thrive, CASEY has been raising awareness of the issue of sexual exploitation of and providing specialized professional development to service providers and includes representation from community organizations, group homes, police, health services, women’s advocacy groups, individuals with lived experience, and Provincial Government departments.

Government recognizes the importance of funding projects such as CASEY as we continue to work to address the ways violence is perpetrated in the province’s communities. Initiatives that directly target violent behavior and fight the social normalization of violence are critical to changing attitudes and behaviour

Everyone involved in this project has a like-minded goal to create awareness and understanding, increase opportunities to network, collaborate, and share information and to advocate for appropriate supports and resources.

Quotes
“Organizations such as CASEY help provide a feeling of reassurance and security to many youth who find themselves in vulnerable situations. It is important individuals feel they have somewhere to turn. Casey, with its professionals with lived experience, gives those individuals the support they seek.”
Honourable Carol Anne Haley
Minister Responsible for the Status of Women

“The CASEY membership is thrilled to have the financial support from the Office of the Status of Women. We have been working as a coalition for over a decade with no secured funding, which has impacted our ability to truly do the work to prevent sexual exploitation. This funding now means we can expand our capacity, launch a youth prevention program, and strengthen our supports to engage survivor voices.”
