Today, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined by the Honourable Derrick Bragg, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, and the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Service NL, at the Drive Electric NL Electric Vehicle Showcase at Confederation Building where they took the opportunity to showcase the prototype of new provincial licence plates for green vehicles.

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment is working with the Department of Service NL to develop the licence plates that will highlight residents’ contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Recently, the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, also announced that two Level 2 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations for use by both the visiting public and provincial government employees, have been installed at the department’s headquarters located at 50 Elizabeth Avenue in St. John’s.

The Provincial Government released it five-year climate change action plan in March 2019 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from across the economy, stimulate clean innovation and growth, and build resilience to the impacts of climate change. Through The Way Forward on Climate Change, the Provincial Government committed to develop a comprehensive long-term strategy to increase electric vehicle penetration in the province.

“We were pleased to have the opportunity today to speak with local leaders in electric vehicle initiatives and to discuss how our province is moving to a greener and more environmentally sustainable future.”
Honourable Dwight Ball
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“Through The Way Forward on Climate Change, we have committed to increase the penetration of electric vehicles in Newfoundland and Labrador, and we are working with governments, organizations and the public to make that a reality as we transition to a low-carbon economy.”
Honourable Derrick Bragg
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment

“We are delighted to be working toward the development of a licence plate prototype for green vehicles in the province. The new plate will uniquely identify these vehicles travelling our roadways.”
Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh
