July 22, 2019

Sarah Stoodley, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, recently joined members of Bell Island’s Heritage Society at the Miner’s Museum to proclaim July 20 as Museum Day.

Through the Cultural Economic Development Program, the Provincial Government contributes over $892,000 to support community heritage organizations such as museums, archives, and historical society organizations. As part of this support, the Provincial Government announced $16,390 to the Bell Island Heritage Society, to assist with operational support and programming at the Bell Island #2 Mine and Community Museum.

A complete list of funding support can be found in the backgrounder below.

Located in every region of the province, museums are an integral part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s cultural fabric. Museum Day is an initiative by the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, which supports and promotes its members through training, communication, advocacy and standards of excellence.

As part of The Way Forward, the Provincial Government released a new Cultural Action Plan to help set priorities and key actions towards supporting and sustaining the cultural sector. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Quotes
“Our tangible and intangible heritage are touchstones of community identity, and anchors of community pride – and museums are one of the essential vehicles for this purpose. Number Two Mine on Bell Island is a significant part of the island’s heritage, and our government is pleased to support its operations and programming.”
Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

“Museums protect, preserve, promote and present our tangible and intangible heritage and culture. They tell our stories in ways that help the visitor understand the legacy of our forefathers and foremothers who were strong, courageous and determined people. These stories are remembered through the amazing ability of the staff in our museums, throughout the province, who bring smiles and laughter to the listener, as well as tears. Museums are an economic engine in communities because they generate new dollars through tourism. They hold memories for our children today and generations to come. Museums matter whether big or small. ”
Teresita McCarthy
President of Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANL)
