A contract has been awarded for the design of a new six-bed mental health unit at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The contract for the design has been awarded to Fougere Menchenton Architecture Incorporated and is valued at $426,000.

A tender for construction will be issued later this year with the project expected to be completed in 2022. Budget 2019: Working Towards a Brighter Future includes investments in mental health to remove barriers to treatment and make it easier for people to access services and supports closer to home. This includes $1 million to start construction on the new unit.

The awarding of this contract supports recommendations in Towards Recovery: The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador to establish four to six dedicated mental health beds in Labrador. The new unit will include services that are inclusive and culturally appropriate for all Labradorians.

A new mental health unit in Labrador also delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to provide better services and support better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Quotes
“This year, we have budgeted more than $108 million for health care facilities in the province. Our investments, such as for this extension in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and others projects in Botwood, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook, Carbonear and Springdale, are not only improving health care infrastructure but are also providing employment for tradespeople in their communities.”
Honourable Steve Crocker
Minister of Transportation and Works

“People living in Labrador who are faced with mental health and addictions issues also often face cultural and language barriers. This new unit means people will have access to services where they will feel supported in an environment closer to home and nearer their families. When there is a comfort level between patients and practitioners, successful healing occurs.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Communities Services

“Government is moving forward, at great pace, with a plan for improving mental health and addictions services in our province. These new beds in the mental health unit at the Labrador Health Centre represent another piece of that plan. There is much more we can accomplish, but as the name of our plan implies, this is another step towards providing timely and compassionate care to those struggling with mental health and addictions.”
Honourable Perry Trimper
MHA for Lake Melville
