The Honourable Brian Warr, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, announced the opening of the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Communities Program today.

Budget 2020 allocates $95,000 for the program, which assists incorporated municipalities, local service districts, and Indigenous governments in planning for changing demographics, as well as in implementing activities, programs and/or infrastructure that can make communities more inclusive.

The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Communities Program is application-based. It provides up to $10,000 to establish an age-friendly community committee, complete a needs assessment, and develop an age-friendly action plan, or up to $15,000 for regional initiatives. For communities that have completed this process, the program also provides funding to support activities, programs and/or infrastructure identified in the action plan to support the goal of making communities more accessible.

Applications will be accepted for the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Communities Program until January 22, 2021.

A video about the program will be played throughout the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador virtual conference, which is taking place from November 5 – 8. Through this video, municipalities will learn more about the program and the importance of becoming age-friendly.

The guidelines and application for the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Communities Program, are online and more information can be provided by calling toll-free 1-888-494-2266.

Quotes
“Creating an accessible, age-friendly province is a responsibility we collectively share and a goal to work toward. All levels of government, public health and educational institutions, the business and non-profit sectors, community organizations, and individuals play an important role in working together to create communities and regions that support healthy aging and accessibility across the lifespan. I encourage all eligible communities and regions throughout the province to learn more about the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Communities Program and the many benefits of becoming an age-friendly community.”
Honourable Brian Warr

“MNL is pleased to support the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Communities Program. So much of what municipalities do is touched by demographics. We need to plan for an aging population when we design our communities, our facilities and our policies. The support provided by this program makes that work much more effective. It has been a popular program with our members and we’re looking forward to see how it improves age-friendly design in our communities right across the province.”
