Applications for Capacity Grant Program being Accepted

  • Children, Seniors and Social Development

November 13, 2020

The Honourable Brian Warr, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, issued a call today for applications for the Capacity Grant Program.

In Budget 2020, the Provincial Government allocated $250,000 for the Capacity Grant Program, which helps non-profit community-based organizations, incorporated municipalities, and Indigenous governments and organizations prevent and remove barriers to inclusion.

The application-based program provides grants of up to $50,000 for eligible projects that will:

  • Build a positive image of disability
  • Deliver services with dignity, fairness and respect
  • Engage persons with disabilities in decision-making
  • Increase access to disability-related supports and accessibility in the built environment

Funding for the Capacity Grant Program will be awarded based on merit and availability.

To date, this funding has assisted many groups including the Newfoundland and Labrador Association for Community Living, which is a non-profit organization that works with and on behalf of persons with intellectual disabilities and their families. The association used the grant to offer information sessions to persons with disabilities and their families and friends across the province on such topics as Supported Living and Housing, the importance of having a plan, Supported Employment, the Individualized Funding model, the Registered Disability Savings Plan and Provincial Incentive Program.

Quotes
“The Capacity Grant Program is designed to support actions that enable persons with disabilities to become more engaged in their community and increase independence. I encourage non-profit community-based organizations, incorporated municipalities, and Indigenous governments and organizations to consider applying for this program in order to further support accessibility and encourage inclusion throughout our province.”
Honourable Brian Warr
Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and
Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities

“The Capacity Grants Program offered through the Disability Policy Office is a vital community funding program which allowed the Newfoundland and Labrador Association for Community Living to offer a variety of information sessions to persons with disabilities and their families and friends throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. We would not have been able to do this work without the support of the Disability Policy Office. Thank you for supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and/or Autism, their families and their communities.”
