National Safe Driving Week Reminds Motorists of the Dangers of Distracted Driving

Today, the Provincial Government recognizes National Safe Driving Week (December 1-7). National Safe Driving Week helps raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving, encourages safer, more defensive driving habits and prepares motorists for driving in adverse road conditions.

The Provincial Government is constantly reviewing and modernizing the Highway Traffic Act by enhancing road safety and seeking solutions to preventable injuries and deaths on the roads throughout the province.

Over the past several years, changes include strengthening provisions for excessive speeding, stunting and street racing; ‘move over’ provisions; and new offences related to driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other persons causing death or bodily harm. The Act was also amended to permit the use of image capture systems, and regulations for these systems are currently being developed.

As the busy holiday season approaches, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are urged to take on roadways, especially during snowy conditions. Take extra time to avoid rushing your drive to work, beware of collision hazards and never drive when fatigued, distracted or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The holiday season provides the perfect time to get together with those we love most, but it also serves as a reminder of how much can be lost if drivers are careless behind the wheel.

Quote
“It is important to recognize that any activity that takes your focus off the road is a distraction. Handheld devices are just one example. Eating, drinking and grooming behind the wheel are all examples of distracted driving. The only thing you should be paying attention to when operating a vehicle is safe driving and the road ahead.”
