The Honourable Derek Bennett, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Municipalities, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Power Transmission Line Replacement –
Gambo to Port Blandford                                                                    (Reg. 2107)
Proponent:  Newfoundland Power Inc.

The proponent is proposing to rebuild a 58-kilometre section of the 124L power transmission line from Gambo to Port Blandford. This proposed work will include the construction of a new corridor adjacent to the existing easement and a new power transmission line. The Project will be built in two phases, with Phase 1 being completed in 2021 and Phase 2 in 2022.

The undertaking was registered on November 2, 2020; the deadline for public comments is December 10, 2020; and the minister’s decision is due by December 17, 2020.

Crown Zone 5 Five-year Forestry Operating Plan
(2021-2025)                                                                                             (Reg. 2108)
Proponent: Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture

The proponent has submitted a proposal for a Five-year Operating Plan for Zone 5 which includes Forest Management Districts 10, 11, 12 and 13 in Central Newfoundland. Zone 5 extends from Victoria Lake in the west to the Bay d’Espoir highway in the east and from Island Pond in the south to North and South Twin Lakes in the north. The undertaking will enable the Forestry and Wildlife Branch to schedule commercial and domestic harvesting, road construction and reforestation activities. The undertaking is necessary to maintain or expand the existing commercial industry and allow domestic harvesting for home heating. The plan is scheduled to commence on January 1, 2021 and end on December 31, 2025.

The undertaking was registered on November 4, 2020; the deadline for public comments is December 10, 2020; and the minister’s decision is due by December 19, 2020.

Baker’s Brook Rock Quarry Expansion                                           (Reg. 2056)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd.

On November 4, 2020, the minister approved the Environmental Protection Plan submitted in fulfillment of a condition of release of this project from environmental assessment.
