October 5, 2020

The dedication and contribution of teachers and educators in Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout the world are being celebrated today in recognition of World Teachers’ Day.

World Teachers’ Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) in 1994 and is celebrated annually on October 5. This year’s theme is ‘Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future’.

Newfoundland and Labrador is home to over 5,600 teachers who work in classroom settings and administrative roles in our province’s school system.

Budget 2020 allocates $22 million, an increase of $9 million from Budget 2019 to continue to build on the significant advancements to K-12 education through the Education Action Plan. There are over 350 additional resources in schools this year under the plan. There are 200 Teacher Learning Assistants; 104 Reading Specialists, 39 Learning Resource Teachers; and, 8 English as a Second Language teachers.

Budget 2020 also provides $20 million for laptops for all teachers, and Chromebooks for all junior high and high school students across the K-12 education system to support digital learning.

Quote
“I sincerely thank all teachers and educators who have been working hard to provide a safe, caring and nurturing environment for students each and every day, and particularly this school year, which is like no other due to COVID-19. They continue to inspire students, demonstrating ingenuity and leadership during this unprecedented time.”
