The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Education, virtually joined the Learning Disabilities Association of Newfoundland and Labrador to proclaim October as Learning Disabilities Awareness Month. The slogan this year is ‘Don’t Diss My Abilities’.

The goal of Learning Disabilities Awareness Month is to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote services and accommodations which improve the achievements of people with a learning disability.

The Learning Disability Association of Canada estimates that one in 10 Canadians has a learning disability.

Each year, the Provincial Government provides $25,000 to the Learning Disabilities Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to the advancement of education, employment and social development of people with learning disabilities.

The Department of Education provides school-based services to support students with a learning disability including alternate format materials, assistive technology, and other accommodations and individualized programming.

Quotes
“Early identification of a learning disability helps educators and families to provide appropriate and ongoing support and accommodations to enable academic and personal success. I thank families and our educators for providing essential support to people with learning disabilities. By working together, we are supporting children, youth and adults with learning disabilities to succeed in today’s world.”
Honourable Tom Osborne
