Premier Furey Announces Senior Public Service Appointment

The Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the appointment of Gary Norris as Clerk of the Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet.

Mr. Norris previously worked with the Provincial Government for 34 years in senior roles including the Clerk of the Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet.  Since leaving government in 2011, Mr. Norris worked for an extended period of time in the mining sector.

With this appointment, Krista Quinlan resumes her role as Deputy Clerk of the Executive Council.

This appointment is effective immediately.

BACKGROUNDER

Biographical Information

Gary Norris

Gary Norris previously worked with the Provincial Government for 34 years and contributed significantly to the advancement of public policy. During this time he served as Clerk of the Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet from November 2000 to February 2001 and from May 2007 to December 2010.  As the province’s most senior civil servant, he brought a fresh perspective and the benefit of his years of executive leadership experience.

Mr. Norris first became employed with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1977.  He also held the roles of Deputy Clerk and Associate Secretary to Cabinet, Deputy Ministers of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat, as well as senior positions with the Executive Council, Environment and Labour, Treasury Board and Finance. Mr. Norris previously served on the boards of directors for the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, The Rooms Corporation, and Marble Mountain Development Corporation.

Mr. Norris graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and economics from Memorial University in 1977.

Since leaving government, Mr. Norris has worked in an executive leadership role in the mining sector.
