The Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador issued the below statement today on the passing of former Supreme Court Justice Seamus O’Regan.

I have known former Supreme Court Justice O’Regan and his family for many years. He was a kind man who had great love for his family and the province as a whole, and who served Newfoundland and Labrador well.

Former Justice O’Regan was a pillar of the province’s legal community for decades between private practice, as a Crown Attorney, then as the first appointed judge of the District Court in the newly created Judicial Centre of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and finally as a Justice with the Supreme Court.

He was a mentor for many of the province’s brightest legal minds, had a quick wit, a wry sense of humour, and could always be counted on to be kind and practical – in any situation.

To honour his life and legacy, flags have been lowered to half-mast at Confederation Building in St. John’s.
