September 10, 2020

Today the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, announced that Budget 2020 will be delivered in the House of Assembly on Wednesday, September 30.

Budget 2020 will reflect government’s ongoing commitment to managing the economic and health challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Delivered at the half-way point of the fiscal year, Budget 2020 will reflect the fiscal and economic update delivered in July 2020.

To ensure sufficient time for budget debate and the Estimates Committee process, and to be respectful of the democratic process as a minority government, on September 14 government will introduce a three-month interim supply bill, which will provide funding approval for government operations.

Interim supply ensures that the public can continue to access services they rely on, such as healthcare, income support, motor registration and transportation until a budget is debated and passed in the House of Assembly. Amidst the uncertainty of this year, interim supply bills have allowed government to maintain these critical services during the COVID-19 disruption.

Quote
“Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have been resilient during a tumultuous year. As we deliver a provincial budget at the midway point of a fiscal year, following a fiscal update in July, there should not be major surprises on budget day. As we move forward with reimagining how government operates, Budget 2020 will continue our balanced approach of strong fiscal management while delivering services and supports for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Honourable Siobhan Coady
Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance
