Due to the overwhelming success of the Residential Construction Rebate Program, the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, announced today that the deadline for substantial completion of renovation work is extended to June 30, 2021.

This three-month extension reflects the significant response to this program, as there were nearly 12,000 homeowner applications received by the deadline. It is anticipated that this $30 million program will be fully-subscribed.

The extension also reflects the supply issues and labour shortages brought about by the considerable demand for the rebate. These outcomes signal that the program is achieving its goal of helping to stimulate the economy and employment in the province’s construction industry.

Applications for the rebate are closed, and the Department of Finance is working to support its partners at the Canadian Home Builders Association – Newfoundland and Labrador to review and process applications in the order they were received. The department has allocated significant resources to address the current approvals backlog, and all homeowner applicants are reminded that they will receive a response whether they qualify for the rebate or not.

Staff continue to follow-up with contractors and homeowners in the event that there are any questions or clarifications needed to an application.
