Public Advisory: Rotational Workers Returning from Syncrude and Suncor Oil Sands Sites Asked to Self-Isolate and Call 811

The Department of Health and Community Services is asking rotational workers returning to Newfoundland and Labrador from Syncrude’s Mildred Lake oil sands site, located near Fort McMurray, Alberta, since August 14, 2020 to self-isolate away from their household members and call 811 for further direction and follow-up.

The department is also asking rotational workers returning to Newfoundland and Labrador from Suncor’s Base Plant, located north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, since August 8, 2020 to do the same.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Fever (or signs of a fever, including chills, sweats, muscle aches, lightheadedness);
  • Cough;
  • Headache;
  • Sore throat;
  • Painful swallowing;
  • Runny nose;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Loss of sense of smell or taste;
  • Unexplained loss of appetite; and,
  • Small red or purple spots on the hands and/or feet.

Public Health is making this request in relation to identified COVID-19 outbreaks declared at both oil sands sites.
