A contract valued at $5.1 million has been awarded to Moss Development Corp. to build a new six-bed mental health unit at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Construction will start in spring 2021 and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure anticipates construction being completed in 2022.

The Honourable Derrick Bragg, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure; the Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs; and Perry Trimper, MHA for Lake Melville took part in a sod-turning ceremony to mark the occasion today.

The new, single story 626 m2 structure will provide private bedrooms for patients receiving professional mental health care and include a dining space, lounge space, and recreation space. The extension will also include a group therapy room, which can also be used for Indigenous ceremonies.

This new unit will include services that are inclusive and culturally appropriate for all residents. This project supports recommendations in Towards Recovery: The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Moss Development estimates between 25 and 50 people from the province will be employed on the construction site, depending on the type of work required.

Quotes
“The construction of this new extension at the Labrador Health Centre will lead to residents receiving care in a modern mental health unit. This project and others in our multi-year infrastructure plan are providing construction jobs for tradespeople in our province, which is also helping the economy in these communities.”
Honourable Derrick Bragg
Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure

“The construction of a mental health unit at the Labrador Health Centre is delivering on government’s commitment in the Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador to improve mental health and addictions services in the region. Labradorians will receive the supports and services they need in a facility that is closer to home.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services

“I am very pleased that recommendations arising from the All-Party Committee on Mental Health and Addictions, and the subsequent Towards Recovery: The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador are being implemented to improve mental health and addictions programs and services. I was proud to be a member of the All-Party Committee and we heard clearly the views and advocacy in Labrador, which included establishing dedicated beds in Labrador that were inclusive and culturally appropriate for all Labradorians.”
Honourable Lisa Dempster
Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs
Minister Responsible for Indigenous Affairs and Reconciliation
Minister Responsible for the Status of Women

“Improving and supporting mental health services in Lake Melville has been an important priority for our government. In addition to the physical and professional support that this infrastructure will provide, having this facility here will provide proximity and thereby, emotional support, from family and friends across Labrador.”
Perry Trimper
