December 4, 2020

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology, today announced $109,350 to start-up tech firms, Averro Robotics and Technology Inc. and totaliQ Technology Inc., to support the growth of existing technologies and further R&D. The minister announced the funding during a tour of the Genesis this week.

Averro Robotics and Technology develops innovative robotic solutions for the industrial testing, inspection, and certification industry. The firm developed an innovative guywire robot, known as ‘Rudy’, to allow tower and flare stack owners to conduct non-destructive testing without the need for rope access teams. To support the Averro Robotics and Technology’s ongoing R&D, the Provincial Government contributed a non-repayable contribution $92,850 to enhance the technical capabilities of Rudy and create the world’s first guywire robot capable of climbing and maintaining lubricated guywires.

totaliQ Technology provides an expertise management platform for large engineering and construction firms, which helps them de-risk projects by leveraging their team’s collective experience. The start-up firm received $16,500 in non-repayable support from the Provincial Government to build an Artificial Intelligence project planning feature into its existing software platform.

Averro Robotics and Technology and TotaliQ Technology are residents of Genesis’ Enterprise incubator program for growth phase companies. Genesis is Memorial University’s support network for technology-based businesses, providing incubator space and access to marketing, finance and management expertise to companies with high growth potential.

The Provincial Government supports high growth, innovative firms whose initiatives align with the Provincial Government’s Business Innovation Agenda.

“Our government is committed to investing in start-up companies, such as Averro Robotics and Technology and totaliQ Technology, with high growth and development potential. This support will provide the tools, resources and opportunities needed to help these firms accelerate growth and further their R&D capabilities during their incubation stage at Genesis. Both Jesse and Andrew are impressive entrepreneurs, and we are pleased to support their firms during this crucial growth stage.”
Honourable Andrew Parsons
Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology

“Averro Robotics has developed a robot (Rudy) for the cost effective and safe inspection of guy wires. Although Rudy can climb the majority of wires, Averro has identified some technical hurdles in climbing lubricated wires. The funding provided by the Department of Industry, Energy, and Technology will allow us to overcome these hurdles and make Rudy more competitive, productive, and able to deploy in even harsher environments.  The successful commercialization of our technology will have significant benefits for both the company and the province.”

CEO, Averro Robotics and Technology

“Our platform’s AI-Assisted Project Planning functionality will significantly enhance the value our customers derive from their collective experience, and this support from the provincial government will help us unlock this value. Making investments like this in Newfoundland and Labrador’s tech ecosystem is a strategic way to help the sector continue to grow as an important and sustainable component of our economy.”
